NEWSFLASH!
At eight
o’clock the next morning Sarah was having break fast with her parents and her
brother, simon. But she wasn’t very hungry.
“what’s the matter, Sarah?” Mrs Bright
asked. “Aren’t you feeling well,dear?”
“I’m okay.”
Well, you aren’t eating very much,” her
father said.
“She’s nervous,” simon added. “radiostars
always get nervous.”
“No,I’m not.You’re so stupid, simon.i just
don’t want to go to radio Southamptampton again today.”
“But it’s only
day two, sarah.” Mr Bright pushed the toast towards Sarah.”
“It’s so
boring. I don’t do anything.”
Sarah’s mother
opened the newspaper. “wait till the end of the week.”
“you both
don’t understand. I need to think of a good story and I can’t think of
anyting.”
Oh dear, mmm …
let me think. Well, there’s a new clothes shop in Totton.”
“Mum, that’s
not a news story.”
“What about
this story? Someone stole my football shorts at scool!”
Oh Simon –
you’re so stupid.”
Mr Bright got
up from the table. “come on you two – time for school and for radio
Southampton.”
“Ph no – look
at the time. I’ll miss my bus.” Sarah picked up her bag.
“hurry,” Said
Simon.”You don’t want to miss your bus or your story!”
“Oh, shut up!
See you all tonight.”
It was ten
o’clock and the morning meeting was just finishing. Jill was walking up and
down and she didn’t look very happy.
“So, any more ideas? Has anyone got any story
– original stories?”
Elain was sitting near the front. “Well –
I’ve got a very good idea …” Suddenly the door opened and Sarah walked in. “Oh,
look, here’s sarah. “hello,Sarah – you’re a bit late.”
“Yes, I’m sorry, but my bus … there was
this …”
But before Sarah chould say anything Jill
turned back to Elaine. ”Now, Elaine, what was your idea?”
“you see,” Elaine went on, “My uncle’s
house in Southampton has got a ghost, and every time …”
Tom started to lough and Jill took off her
glasses. “And? Every time what?”
“Well, there’s a ghost, so my uncle
says,and that’s it really…”
“I see.” Jill looked at Sarah. “Sarah, have
you got any ideas?”
Sarah felt everyone looking at her again.
”well …em …something happened on the bus – I think it might be interesting for
you. There was an accident.”
“Oh, what happened?” Jill ws getting
really interested.
“Well, the bus drove into a restaurant.
There was glass every where.”
“Did the police and ambulance service
come?”
“Yes, two people were injured, I think. And
the police were talking to the driver and looking at the bus.”
“Sarah – that’s a great story. Which
restaurant is it?”
“It’s next to the bus station.”
“You don’t remember the name?”
“No, that’s ‘Bella Pasta’,” nick said.
“They do really good pasta there. Mmm, Pasta Carbonara is the best. I
could eat some now.”
“Thanks, Nick, very useful.”
“Maggie, can you find the number and check
the details. So, who was injured?”
“There was a man in the restaurant, and a
little girl and her mother were just walking past,” Said Sarah.
“Okay – Tom
can you ring Southampton police and find out any more information. Maggie, take
Sarah with you and go to the restaurant. We need a long report for the
lunchtime new.”
“Come on then,
Sarah,” Maggie said and picked up her bag. “there’s no time to lose.” Only
Elaine did not move. She was left alone with Jill.
“Can I do
anything?”
“Oh,
Elaine> no, thanks, not right now – just stay here and … er … watch Tom.”
Maggie picked
up a notepad and some car keys from her desk. “Okay, Sarah, we’ll take the
radio car. Can you gettwo tape recorders and some tape? Quick! Bob, can I take
this mobile phone?”
“If you give
me the number,” answered Bob.
“It’s
0830557750.”
Sarah didn’t
know where the tape recorders were.
“Who can I
ask?” she thought. “I don’t want to ask Elaine.”
“Sarah, are you ready?” shouted Maggie.
“Er<
Elaine,” called sarah, “Can you show me where the tape recorders?”
“yes, I’m
coming.”
“Maggie, don’t
forget to ring me as soon as you can. I need a first report for eleven o’clock,”
Tom called as the left the office.
“I know, Tom –
but it’s 10.30 now and I need five minutes
To get there.
I’ll do my best.”
Maggie was
waiting by the door for sarah. “Sarah, you must be quick in this job. Every
second counts. “Oh damn, I need the toilet. Oh well, I’ll have to wait again.”
Five minutes
later Maggie parked the car in the road near the ‘Bella Pasta’rstaurant. By now
a crowd of people had come to see what had had happened. The restaurant sign
was broken and there was glass everywhere . a large whitepolice lorry was just
pulling the bus away from the restaurant. There were a lot of table and chairs
and white tablecloths on the ground. The manager of the restaurant, a small man
with a large bald head, was talking to a policeman. Maggie went straight up to
a policewoman who was standing near the crowd.
“Excuse me
officer. I’m from Radio Southampton. Can I ask you some questions? I only have
a few minutes – I need to do a report for the eleven o’clock news,but I can
interview you properly after that.”
“Yes, if I can
help you.”
First, can you
tell me if anyonr wa injured?”
“Yes, a
little girl and her and her mother who
were walking past the restaurant. The ambulance is taking them to Southampton
General Hospital.”
“Do you know
what’swrong with them?”
“No, not
exactly . you’ll have to ring the hospital.”
“Sarah, ring
Shouthampton Hospital and find out who the dusty nurse. Here’s the mobile – the
hospital number is 777222.”
“Oh, okay.”
Sarah triedthe number but nothing happened. Maggie turned to the policeman
again.
“Sorry,
office. Can you tell me what happened?”
“no, but that
man over there was in the restaurant at the time – he can tell you.”
‘Great. Thank
you. Sarah, what did the hospital say?”
“I don’t know,
I can’t use this phone.”
‘look, give it
to me …” Meggie took the mobile and walkes over to the man who was sitting on
the steps of the restaurant. “Exkcuse me, are you the manager of ‘Bella Pasta’?
I’m from Radio Southampton.”
“Si. Yes, I’m
Mr proty.”
“I have to do
a report at eleven o’clock. It’s four minutes to eleven now. Can you just tell
me in thirty seconds what happened?”
“Mama mia. In
thirty seconds?”
“Can you Try,

“E, I try. The
bus went through the glass windows. We don’t know why. Who knows why? I am
above the restaurant and I hear a big

restaurant, but the little girl a woman, her mother, they areoutside the

“It’s in you

“oh, yes,

information for the report. Hello, radio car to base, can you hear me?”
Jill spoke
into the microphone. “Maggie, I can hear you well> are you ready for the
news? It’s the first story. Forty seconds – is that pkay?”
“I’m writing
it now … is the signal good?”
“Great … no
problem.”
Quickly Maggie
put on a set of headphones and stood next to the car with the micrpone in her
hand.
At the same
time Tom was sitting in a studio at the radio station.
“It’s eleven o’clock. I’m Tom poople with

“They’re in
